It is that time of the year again! It’s time to renew your NLG-LA membership! Not a member? It’s time to change that! Our members have achieved so much over the past year, and I am confident that we will achieve so much more in 2023. Your support is a critical part of helping us get there.
Over the last year, NLG-LA members have been at the forefront of protecting civil liberties across the Los Angeles area. When ICE and DHS threatened street vendors outside SoFi Stadium during Super Bowl weekend, our Immigration Committee provided on-call support, valuable Know Your Rights materials, and conducted a Know Your Rights presentation in Spanish to street vendors.
We also provided support in advance of the 2022 Women’s March via a Know Your Rights Training, as well as sent a team of Legal Observers to monitor the march itself. When the United States Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, NLG-LA Legal Observers were out on the streets for hours every day to hold DHS and LAPD accountable for the numerous 1st Amendment violations and blatant violence that they perpetrated against protestors – and our LOs – in the resulting protests.
Last month, we met with the City of Santa Monica and stood up for street vendors. You can read our follow up letter here. We are committed to holding the city accountable and creating a fair environment for street vendors.
