NLG-LA to Honor LA City Councilmember Mike Bonin at Annual Awards Gala

The Los Angeles Chapter of the National Lawyers Guild (NLG-LA) will honor Los Angeles City Councilmember Mike Bonin at the upcoming NLG-LA Annual Awards Gala on December 4th. Bonin will deliver the keynote address.

Last weekend, audio was leaked that revealed racist comments made by Los Angeles City Councilmembers Nury Martinez, Gil Cedillo, and Kevin de León. These comments included remarks targeted at Mike Bonin’s son. For 85 years, NLG has fought against racial injustice, and we are proud to stand with those affected by these comments. While Councilmember Martinez has resigned, the colleagues who joined her in making these remarks have yet to do so. Earlier this week, we called for Councilmembers de León and Cedillo to resign, and we reiterate our call for them to do so immediately.

“It means a lot to me to be selected by the National Lawyers Guild of Los Angeles for this honor,” said City Councilmember Bonin. “NLG-LA has been a consistent leader in the fight against racial injustice, and in the fights to protects the rights of renters and the unhoused. I am proud to support NLG’s work and look forward to continuing to fight together for justice.”

From his work to increase the minimum wage to his advocacy for our environment, Bonin has been a steadfast champion of progressive causes and has worked to create an equitable and fair Los Angeles. As he prepares to leave office, we want to provide a forum to celebrate his successes and the hard work that he has put into improving our city.

“Mike Bonin is a consistent champion of progressive values and a fighter for racial justice,” said NLG-LA Executive Director Christopher Chavis.  “As a progressive organization, we want to make sure we act in accordance with our values, which include celebrating and supporting a staunch ally.”

The event is open to the public and will begin at 5 PM Pacific Time on December 4th. You can find information about registering for the event by going to https://nlg-la.org/annual-dinner-2022/.
