HONOREES:

  • Al Otro Lado, a bi-national, direct legal services organization serving indigent deportees, migrants, and refugees in Tijuana. They have shown courage in the face of government threats and deportation, and they are currently engaged in several legal challenges to federal anti-immigrant policies.

  • Shiu-Ming Cheer, Senior Staff Attorney & Field Coordinator for the National Immigration Law Center (NILC); her work focuses on challenging immigration enforcement and promoting pro-immigrant policies. Previously a Soros Justice Fellow, she has a long history of involvement in social justice organizing projects, campaigns, and coalitions

  • Orange County Homelessness Litigation Team – Carol Sobel, Cathy Sweetser & Brooke Weitzman. Together, these civil rights attorneys sued Orange County cities in federal court, resulting in a ruling that it is unconstitutional to prosecute people for sleeping in public when they do not have access to shelter.

  • Robert Newman, long-time civil and human rights attorney. Robert has argued and won at least 20 published and precedent setting cases involving everything from police abuse to general assistance to areas of disability and poverty. His stellar record on behalf of people who are poor or homeless is unparalleled. His victories have brought relief to literally millions of people. He is a mentor and role model for many attorneys in our community. His life and work embody the highest ideals of the Guild.

  • United Teachers of Los Angeles (UTLA), organized a strike that was a watershed moment for public education. In six days, UTLA galvanized the city, dominated national media coverage, won a ground-breaking contract, and learned that in the battle to reinvest in our schools, the public stands with teachers. With 34,000 members out on the street, it was one of the biggest strikes in California history.
