The October monthly meeting of the Immigration Committee will take place:
Wednesday, October 19th
noon - 1:30 pm
Law Office of Vera Weisz
510 W. 6th St., Suite 200
Topic: The Campaign for Universal Representation for Detained Immigrants
Emi MacLean, an attorney with the National Day Laborers Organizing Network (NDLON), will discuss the California Coalition for Universal Representation, a campaign to urge California's state and and local governments to create publicly-funded programs to provide counsel to detained immigrants in removal proceedings who cannot otherwise afford an attorney. The proposal follows the example of New York City, which instituted such a program beginning with a pilot in 2013 and expanding to full coverage the following year.
Our meeting will begin with a brief report on the most recent EOIR Liaison meeting and an update on the upcoming Binational Conference on Border Issues sponsored by the NLG, LACBA and El Colegio de la Frontera Norte (COLEF) that will take place on Friday, October 28, 2016 on the campus of COLEF in Tijuana, BC, Mexico.
All are welcome regardless of NLG membership. As usual, a tasty lunch and excellent coffee will be provided for a voluntary donation. See you Wednesday!
