This fall, the Immigration Committee of the National Lawyers Guild has hit the ground running. Four interns from University of California-Irvine will hone their skills as court watchers in the Los Angeles Immigration Court. These committed students will be trained by NLG Immigration Committee members, and then will begin observing immigration court, noting many different aspects of the proceedings. They will be especially alert to due process and ethical violations that occur with disturbing frequency.
The Immigration Committee is also poised to elect a new steering committee at its October 14, 2015 meeting. Members interested in infusing the Committee with new energy and ideas, now is the time to step up and take a leadership role.
Also at the October 14th meeting, Gary Finn will discuss his recent win in Acosta-Olivarria v. Holder, decided by the Ninth Circuit on August 26, 2015.
The Immigration Committee is planning a seminar on the immigration consequences of driving under the influence including the impact of a conviction on good moral character, eligibility for bond, inadmissibility and removability, how to avoid aggravated felonies, and the drug abuser/addict ground of deportation. MCLE credit will be available, including one hour of substance abuse credit. Seminar will take place in January 2016.
